Parent Orientation Program

Comments from Past Participants:

  • "Enjoyed it very much.  This was my third college orientation and was by far the most informative."
  • "Great program.  Thanks much.  I feel my daughter is in good hands and that a great education is in her future."
  • "The parental portion of the orientation was phenomenal. This is my first child going off to college and we are out of state. I have to say that this visit has alleviated a tremendous amount of anxiety and stress. Thank you!"
  • "This far exceeded my expectations.  Of course I wondered what they could possibly tell us - how many ways to pay tuition?  Yet every session was helpful."

Program Information

Our parent and guest programming is designed to address the most common questions parents have about their students attending the University of Colorado from a parent perspective.

All programming for parents and guests is optional, but is highly recommended. Because student attendance at all sessions is mandatory, parents and guests should not make plans with their students that interfere with their attendance, including during the evening events.

Before you make a parent or guest reservation: be sure to review important information about your student's orientation found on the orientation reservation page for the academic college or school to which they were admitted. Parents and guests can only make orientation reservations once their student's orientation session has been confirmed.

First-Year Student June/July Sessions

Parents and guests attending an orientation session in June or July have presentations scheduled into the early evening on the first day and until approximately 4:00 p.m. on the second day.

Parent and Guest Housing
In order to make orientation attendance affordable, guests of students have the option of staying on campus in a residence hall during our June/July programs (separate from the students).* Facilities are not air-conditioned and baths are shared, so the experience is rustic (and nostalgic for many). See Orientation Costs for parent/guest overnight housing information. Overnight accommodations on campus for parents/guests are limited and we may not be able to honor walk-in requests. Please make your reservations early. Parent and guest overnight accommodations include breakfast on the second day.

See Travel, Parking and Visitor Information for information about local hotels.

Parent and Guest Reception (Optional)
The June and July first-year student orientation sessions offer parents and guests the opportunity to attend the Parents and Guests Reception, sponsored by the Office of Parent Relations. Reservations are $15/person, payable at the time of your orientation reservation. Walk-in reservations may not be available. This enjoyable and relaxing event includes entertainment and the opportunity to dine with CU staff members and current CU parents.

First-Year Student August Sessions

Important Notes

  • Be sure to carefully read all of the information below BEFORE you make a reservation for orientation.
  • Construction on the CU campus is requiring us to modify our orientation patterns.  Please do not rely on older friends or relatives for descriptions about when you need to arrive, and what you need to do.  Most things will be different from previous years.
  • All Music students and out-of-state students who are unable to attend any of the June/July orientation dates may attend the orientation session held August 18-21. However, we are able to provide more individual support in June and July because of the smaller number of attendees, and students (and families) describe feeling less overwhelmed with the transition to college when they attend orientation prior to the August move-in.
  • If students elect to attend the August Make-up session they will likely incur additional costs.
  • Be prepared for other time consuming obligations during this time such as moving into your residence hall and participating in new student activities.
  • Housing and Dining Services offers early move-in on Monday, for an additional fee of up to $70 (the fee is a daily rate calculated based on the Housing Contract—will vary depending on the type of room).  We strongly encourage students attending the August orientation to move in on Monday, August 18 so you will have time to settle in to your residence hall room.  For those students taking advantage of this option, the first meal provided in the dining halls will be lunch on Monday, August 18.  You must participate in all orientation activities including evening presentations.  You will not be able to leave orientation to take care of move-in related business because all orientation programs are required.
  • Attendance at the August Make-Up orientation will not disadvantage you with regard to course selection.   By using pre-registration in required major courses, and reserving spaces in courses for each orientation group, students are able to get a schedule that makes progress toward their degree and general education requirements.

Because the August session includes meetings for students in each of the undergraduate colleges and schools as well as move-in, that session is follows a modified pattern from the June/July programs. Parent programming is completed by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening though most students will continue to have orientation requirements on Thursday.

Parent and Guest Housing
Because all of our students are beginning to move into the residence halls in August, we cannot offer parents and guests the option to stay on campus during August. See Travel, Parking and Visitor Information for information about local hotels.

Parent meals in August
In August registered parents/guests eat lunch with their students in the dining center on Tuesday.  No other meals are provided.

International Student August Sessions

  • The orientation program for International students and their registered parents and guests begins Friday, August 15.
  • The parent/guest conference for transfer student parents concludes at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 18.
  • The parent/guest conference for first-year student parents concludes at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 20.

Transfer Student Sessions

Transfer student sessions offer a one-day parent conference.  Check-in begins at 7:00 a.m. on the day of orientation.  Presentations last until 5:00 p.m.  A continental breakfast is included.

Transfer students and parents/guests who wish to attend a more comprehensive two-day orientation program should call the Office of Orientation to make this request at 303-492-4431.
